HYDERABAD: For the first time, backward class Muslims will be given four per cent reservation in the ensuing Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Elections.
The reservation will be extended to 14 sub-castes of Muslims under Backward Classes (E) category. With this, only Muslims candidates will be able to contest in some of the municipal divisions in the GHMC elections.
The Muslim sub-castes are Attar Saibulu, Borewale, Chakketakare, Dhobi, Faquir, Garadi, Gosangi, Guddi Eluguwale, Hajjam, Labbi, Quresh, Sheikh, Siddi and other groups already listed. The castes that have not be included in the BC (E) category are Syed, Moghal, Pathan, Irani and Arabs.
The municipal administration and urban development (Muad) principal secretary Pushpa Subramanyam, responding to a letter by the Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT), on the reservations asked the GHMC to enumerate the above caste population during the BC voters enumeration as per the section (5) (2)(b) of the Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Act 1955.
The reservations for Muslims are being given under section (3) of AP Reservation in favour of Socially and Economically Backward of Muslims Act 2007.
“Some sub-castes of Muslims will be given reservation under BC (E) category as per the government orders,” GHMC special commissioner S P Singh told TOI.
There are 150 municipal divisions in the GHMC which are going for polls in the next two months. Of the total 150 seats, 33 per cent will be reserved for BC voters. Until now only four categories A, B, C and D categories in Backward Classes were given reservation in the elections. With the clarification BC (E) also will be given reservation.
The GHMC began BC voter enumeration on June 12 and the process will be completed next month. Final draft of BC voters division wise population will be published on July 27.
